what is it about the star wars stories that can have such a real, powerful impact? i have had to put in a lot of effort to like and appreciate the last two movies, but even so, the power of the stories seems to be able to burst out of the confines of sometimes uncomfortable quantaties of squirming and groan-worthy movie minutes. the story that the prequels are struggling to express can still inspire passion and inspiration and creativity and change.

Re: the power of star wars mythology

I think the prequels will begin to answer "why" questions that are brought up in the original trilogy. Like what was mentioned in other posts...why luke had to train, why the dark side is the way it is, what can happen to ordinarily nice people.
I think the prequels rock especially episode 2 was amazing. -

Re: the power of star wars mythology
Fri, February 25, 2005 - 2:12 AMAlthough many of my fellow fans may find the Prequiels not up to standard to the original trilogy, I'm finding that these "lost" episodes are actually intensifing the origionals.
When Ben fianally meets Luke and see's that Luke somehow found R2 and 3PO, and some how wound up with a hologram of Leia; that is a family reunion right out of Lifetime Televison! Ben knows everything about everyone, Ben is the key to Luke and Leia's past and legacy. To see Ben cut down by Vader is that much more of a devastating because Ben never gets to tell Luke and Leia anything, not even about Nabboo, or their mother Padime. All that lost knowledge!
The fact that it took years to train a Jedi, and that training started at childhood, makes Lukes story even more precarious because he's a rush job last minute Jedi who got almost too little training too late. You thought he was an underdog before, these prequiels make Lukes victory an absolute mericale!
You also get to see Leia's natural toughness as a hint of her Jedi ability. Dude, she was tortured for hours by Vader with every device on the Deathstar! She told him Nothing, and remained daisy fresh! Luke stumbles into Leia's cell and the girl's having a bit of a lie down. Gown is prestine white and not a bun out of place. You would think maybe a little disheveled or slightly shaken, smeared make up perhaps? Oh no, not Leia, she's all sassy, witty, and refreshed!
The dynamics of Vader's and the Emperor's relationship gose beyond just master and servant. The Emperor was a true mentor to Vader, almost a father type figure. We'll also get to see the extent of Anakins injuries in this up coming movie. Vader to my understanding is little more than the reanimated remains of Anakin. See the movie "Virus" and you'll get an idea of the type of horrors that are contained in Vader's black body suit. I'm guessing that even Anakin himself thought he was dead.
Then we get to see how the Emperor, became Emperor; and how a whole order of Jedi could have fallen. Also we get to become emotionally invested in Bail Origana and Alderraan. Just when we finally get to see the planet, it's instantly distroyed with Bail still on it. You know I bought the DVD trilogy and I still haven't whatched it. I think i'll do that tommarrow.
