According to Drudge, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has recently enjoyed a little Broadway entertainment. And Page Six reports that she’s also working on her backhand with Monica Seles. So the Gulf Coast has gone all Mad Max, women are being raped in the Superdome, and Rice is enjoying a brief vacation in New York. We wish we were surprised.
What does surprise us: Just moments ago at the Ferragamo on 5th Avenue, Condoleeza Rice was seen spending several thousands of dollars on some nice, new shoes (we’ve confirmed this, so her new heels will surely get coverage from the WaPo’s Robin Givhan). A fellow shopper, unable to fathom the absurdity of Rice’s timing, went up to the Secretary and reportedly shouted, “How dare you shop for shoes while thousands are dying and homeless!” Never one to have her fashion choices questioned, Rice had security PHYSICALLY REMOVE the woman.
Angry Lady, whoever you are, we love you. You are a true American.
For anyone who still doesn't get it, let's talk for a moment about why this story matters.
The president, finally, has decided that the hurricane is a problem. He claims yesterday at 5pm, finally, that he's going to be devoting his entire administration to saving the lives of the people currently dying in this growing national disaster. And what does a top member of his cabinet do? She goes to a Broadway comedy and today is buying multi-thousand-dollar shoes on 5th Avenue at the same time CNN is showing dead grandmothers in wheelchairs abandoned on the streets of New Orleans.
This is more than just a cheap shot at Condi. What in the blazes is this woman doing at a Broadway show in the middle of a national emergency? This is akin to going to a Broadway show in the middle of September 11. Don't we expect the Secretary of State to work past 5pm on a day an entire American city is being wiped off the face of the planet? And shouldn't she be doing something else today than shopping at filthy rich stores on 5th Avenue? Could she be - oh, I don't know - working with foreign leaders, like the Mexicans, to see what immediate assistance they can offer to the neighbor?
New Orleans is ceasing to exist. What in God's name is Bush doing letting his secretary of state go on vacation in the middle of this?
Message: "I don't care."

Re: Sec of State Condi Rice responds to hurricane disaster by buying several-thousand-dollar pair of shoes in NYC moments ago, and spends last night at Broadway show!
Sun, September 11, 2005 - 1:59 AMThere is a requirement for humanity to ask for more appropriate beings to guide us. Portioning any blame in the direction of cold blooded, childish, self centred individuals such as Condo Rice and Gee Dubya is, in my humble opinion, a complete waste of time. Please notice that I said COMPLETE!
Think of the movie 'Dances with Wolves' in the scene where our hero has been re-captured by the Army. After a time being held captive he is asked a question by the Captain and replies native american: 'I am Dances with Wolves, you are not worth talking to, I am Dances with Wolves, you are not worth talking to'.
I suggest that humanity must look to itself for answers not to 'our leaders' because 'our leaders' are all part of the illusion that we have come to call 'the World'. Perhaps it should really be called 'The Wirled' as it is a rather strange mixed up place...its wakey wakey time for everyone.
Look to ourselves for blame
Hang our heads not in shame
It will always be the same
Till we stop playing their game
Time to take some responsibility
Time for a little originality
Time for some evolutionality
Time to create a new reality
The can be only one....ness! -

Tue, September 13, 2005 - 12:19 PMI disagree. There is no requirement for humanity to require somone "more appropriate" to guide us. What does that mean? As for organized leadership there is a "social contract" that the goverened and those in rulership must abide by. Basic functions that we all expect a governing body to provide and we give them this power and funding to accomplish it. That basic government responsibility failed and the predictable results happened.
"I suggest that humanity must look to itself for answers not to 'our leaders" Humanity as a group of people did look to help themselves during the Hurricane and the leaders held them back at gun point. Just like in "Dances with Wolves" we all have an idea of what happened with the Native Americans. With this hurricane our elected leaders were to blame for moving so slowly and the fact that she was out shoe shopping is horrible! That angry woman in the store was great. And here are my sources for humanity being hald back a gun point. Check this EMT from SF's personal experience in NO. www.democraticunderground.com/dis....php -

Wed, April 26, 2006 - 9:01 AMYuo shouldn't be blaming yourselves for events like this, we have very little freedom as to who governs us, they may wear different coloured ties but be honest, they're all the same, I think that Rice woman was horrible too, as far as I'm concerned politicians should have state housing (is that the right term?) and be allowed no access to money (or oil tankers), give them as little temptation for corruption as possible, and then they can try leading for a change instead of indulging themselves and having the prestige of a title they did not earn and do not deserve
