I would assume this has been covered somewhere already, but is there an official or reasonable explanation for why in A New Hope, Ben seems to have forgotten that he did previously know R2 and C3PO?

Tue, February 7, 2006 - 3:55 PMI seem to have remember reading somewhere that obi wan did in fact remember the droids-but was of course not in the position to divulge the fact. He is honest however: He didn't remember 'owning' a droid (as a Jedi he had no possessions except for one; his lightsaber-his ship and his droids were property of the Old Republic and tools for his work)
later he does say to R2: "Come here my little friend..." right before he starts the message from princess Leia.
One of those 'matters of points of view' that crop up in the stories all too often. -

Wed, February 8, 2006 - 9:59 AMThere is also the fact that he does get a look of recognition when the whole subgect gets brought up.
I think it's interesting that he restrains himself from divulging anything about the fact that the hologram they are watching is infact his (Lukes) sister and that the droids ar rightfully his.
